We have recently uploaded a very cool high resolution 3d Scan of a skull to the Scan-Store which you can download for free and use as you see fit. I think I’m right is saying it probably the the first time this sort of data has been freely available and makes for great anatomical reference. Enjoy!

Modo skin shading tutorial now avaliable

Using one of our latest generation head scans this tutorial takes you through the process of creating and rendering realistic looking Skin using Modo 601.

Chapter 1 :: Introduction (Watch Sample)

We look at the ZTool using Zbrush 4R5 and export the mesh and normal map into Modo where we apply both diffuse and colour and set-up the lighting.

Chapter 2 :: Sub dermal skin textures

This chapter looks specifically at the lower dermal skin texture and SSS settings.

Chapter 3 :: Upper dermal skin textures

Upper dermal and Diffuse tint textures are all covered in this section

Chapter 4 :: Specular and reflection

Learning how to control the specular highlights using very easy to create maps in photoshop

Chapter 5 :: Bump mapping

A very quick and easy way of generating great looking bump maps from the diffuse colour map

360 Degree 3D head scanning

We have upgraded our Agisoft photogrammetry rig with a further 12 cameras giving us a total of 30 x canon’s

These are our first tests capturing a full 360 degree head in 1/10,000th of a second the camera layout still needs some tweaking but these early tests are very encouraging. The new version of Agisoft has an incredible mosaic texture blending allowing for super crisp high res textures, this combined with properly unwrapped UV’s gives some amazing results.

Scanning an environment with Agisoft

This is a very simple environment scanning test using a single camera and Agi PhotoScan, I know its been done before 1000 times but the results are very encouraging.

Point cloud view in Agi, again this was a quick test and amounted to nothing more than a few shots with a DSLR. Next time we do this we are going to try a multi camera approach to try and capture an entire section of the environment with one shot.

We didn’t take any top down shots of the rock hence the horrible sky coloured bubble.

The texture maps are average baked at 7,000 x 7,000 for this example, they are not bad but poor lighting on the day means there is a lot of baked in shadow.

It really is a very easy thing to do, it should be interesting to see how far we can push it. Being able to capture a clean detailed textured environment has so many potential applications Imagine a photo realistic environment like this running in unity with an oculus rift, watch this space

Skin shading in Modo

Or resident Modo artist Ross Mansfield has been slowly converting us all to Modo. Having always used Lightwave 3D for rendering switching over wasn’t much of a problem. One thing that is immediately noticeable is the ease of which you can get incredible looking renders in little to no time. This is our first skin shader test, bearing in mind no one in the studio has ever used it for skin shading before this test took about 2 hours from start to finished. Simply incredible software!

We used one of our full body colour scans from the scan store as a test subject. with a few simple epidermal / subdermal / spec and bump maps we managed to achieve some great results

Dynamic Pose Capture

We had the pleasure of working with some incredibly talented sculptors, Fabien Merelle, Christophe Chabenet and Pascal Molina

We scanned Fabien using a combination of Artec scanning for the body and photogrammetry for the face. Obviously this was a very hard pose to hold and capturing it was a difficult task but with a bit of patience and lots of Artec Studio know how we managed to produce a very clean scan.

The head was captured with the Artec but in order to get a perfect expression we used our 18 camera AGI rig to capture the expression, this was then combined with the Artec scan in Zbrush to create the final model.

The final piece will be printed and re sculpted into a 5m tall! version of the original sculpture below

3D Printed Scan

We received 3 6cm prints of our kick boxer scan from PD Models today. considering the size of the model the quality is excellent. They were good enough to provide us with 3 version of the same model one primed and polished, one with just the primer coat and the last one in the raw material.

The Dark art of colour structured light scanning

Were always looking for new and exciting ways to develop the scanning equipment that we have here at ten24. This model represents a combination scan using both Structured light (Artec) and Photogrammetry (18 Camera AGI rig)

The first Step is to scan the model (Ryan Terry) using our Artec hand held scanner, This provides us with an incredibly clean high resolution mesh shown above

A second scan is then performed using out 18 camera photogrammetry rig, and whilst it does capture a lot of geometric detail such a small number of cameras means it still lags behind the artec in terms of outright quality. It does however capture hugely high resolution texture maps.

Unfortunately we are not going to go into the process of how we exactly align the two meshes but its a lot of work and definitely does not rely on non rigid alignment as some people have speculated. After the we take the model into zbrush and do a quick Qremesh using guide splines. Raw scan data is very hard to work with and re-meshing it with rough topology makes it much easier to edit.

As you can see from the above image the topology is by no means animation ready but for clean-up purposes its much better than 4million triangles.

The mesh is split into poly-groups and UV’d ready for projection

Once the mesh is finalised Its imported back into AGI and the high res textures are applied to the new UV’d model
